Over 1600 years Old Institution

The most ancient governing body on Earth is Earth herself. Since time immemorial ancient societies have honored ancestral authority and Earth law. Ogboni is an ancient Spiritual institution arising from West Africa from those roots and whose history extends into antiquity long before colonial contact. It is at minimum, 1000 years old based on ancient Ogboni artifacts . From its earliest beginnings and based on our traditional Ifa Literary Corpus, Ogboni was founded to bring Order, harmony, and Justice to Communities and Ancient Kingdoms. Ogboni functioned as a custodial institution of moral law, ancestral wisdom, and a governing council for Rulers and Towns. They were the Senate and Supreme Court of the Land who ruled along side the Oba. Ogboni was entrusted with maintaining balance between spiritual law, human conduct, and the natural world. Its role established ethical authority, upheld justice, and safeguarded communal stability. Ogboni are priest of Ile ( Earth) and Custodians of her Laws. The Earth itself is recognized as the ultimate witness to truth, oath, and consequence. Through oral tradition, disciplined practice, and ancestral continuity, Ogboni preserved principles of integrity, restraint, responsibility, and service to the collective good.

Ogboni through Colonialization & Westernization

Colonialism and The Maafa—the transatlantic slave trade—tore millions of Africans from their ancestral lands, scattering Africas  children across oceans. Colonial powers in Africa and the New lands systematically suppressed traditional African spiritual practices, criminalizing our ceremonies and erasing our governance structures. Yet even in on distant lands, the seeds of our spiritual heritage could not be destroyed. The knowledge lived in hearts and hands, whispered through generations throughout the Americas—adapting, surviving, enduring.

Ogboni in the United States

Today, Ogboni continues on American soil as an ancestral spiritual authority for our time. The presence of Ogboni in the United States reflects a broader movement of ancestral reconnection, cultural restoration, and spiritual responsibility among people of African descent and others called to the tradition. The Ogboni United States Jurisdiction was established to provide structure, recognition, and unity for  Ogboni and traditional Priesthoods within the U.S. A and its Territories . It  honors traditional authority and lineage while supporting ethical organization, communication, and collective purpose in the United States.
